Sileby Town Women’s Valkyries made history yesterday as they took to the pitch for their first-ever Inner Warrior Series (IWS) match day, and what a fantastic start to their journey!
Facing Melbourne in their opening fixture before taking on WyggBorough, the combined side of Oadby Wyggs and Loughborough, the Valkyries finished the day unbeaten, securing a 15–5 victory in their first match and a hard-fought 5–5 draw in their second.
From the opening whistle, the team demonstrated the progress they have made in training, putting their skills into practice with well-organised attacking play, strong carries and committed tackling. The forwards worked hard to dominate at the set piece and secure possession at the breakdown, providing quick ball for the backs to move wide and make the most of the space available.
Just as importantly, the team showed fantastic communication and teamwork throughout both matches. Taking time to regroup, listen and reset their structure helped the players adapt as the games progressed, with confidence growing and performances improving minute by minute. Players stepped into different positions, embraced new challenges and supported one another every step of the way.
A special mention goes to Naomi, Ella and Odette, who all played their first-ever contact rugby games and rose to the occasion brilliantly. Their performances were a fantastic example of what the Inner Warrior Series is all about: creating opportunities for women to develop their rugby skills, build confidence and enjoy the game in a supportive environment.
Congratulations also to our players of the match, with Odette named Forward of the Match and Ruby taking Back of the Match honours following two outstanding performances. A huge well done to Will, who captained the side for the first time and led the team through two excellent games.
The team were full of praise for the coaching, guidance and encouragement provided by Corinne and Sean, as well as the support from everyone who came along to cheer them on from the touchline. That encouragement helped make the occasion even more special.
Above all, the day was about enjoying rugby, learning together and building confidence. The smiles, enthusiasm and positive feedback from the players said it all, with many already looking forward to getting back out on the pitch.
With a win, a draw and plenty of valuable experience gained, the Valkyries have made an excellent start to their IWS campaign. The results were important, but the team spirit, commitment and enjoyment on display were just as encouraging.
A brilliant first chapter for our Valkyries, with plenty more to come!
