After a Home Walk Over the weekend before in the Presidents Cup it was back to the league with your Sileby Vikings travelling to South Leicester. The sides had met three times last season, the Vikes taking Ws on each occasion. However, the home side had been buoyed by some graduating colts and a successful trip to Vipers 2 earlier in the campaign.
On a blustery day in Wigston it was however the away side that dominated the first half, the score at 0-35 when the whistle blew. It was the Sileby set piece that proved the foundation, with each of the 5 tries coming from penalties, line outs or kick offs. The pick of the tries was the fourth, with several forwards working in tandem to break up the far side of the field following a kick off. With Harry Nichols & Aaron Thurlow taking to ball to 5 metres out. Then a superb offload from Dave Collison allowed Number 8 Adam Mayes to touch down. For the others: Jacob Moore beat 3 defenders off first phase to go under the posts, and Zak Loveridge, Harry Greenbury & Jon Griffiths all found space out wide to do down.
The second half was a more even affair, the conditions and the referee’s patience evening out the contest. The away side had 4 yellow cards (echoing the second half against Rolls Royce) for various indiscretions of varying severity. Clearly that disrupted Sileby’s flow, allowing South Leicester the opportunity of possession and territory. It was great resilience from the home side that the second half would amount to a final result of two tries a piece. For the Vikings, it was Griffiths & Mayes each doubling their tally; the pick of the tries being the latter feeding the former close to the line to go under the sticks untouched.
Next week, the small matter of Syston 3s at Barkby Road.
