Sileby Town RFC

48 - 5

(HT 0-0)

Vipers RFC

Platts Lane welcomed league opposition for the first time in the form of Vipers 2s, one of several second and third teams joining the league structure this season. This created a sense of uncertainty as to how strong these oppositions would be.

Buoyed by a great result the weekend before, the Vikings dominated the opening stages, regularly visiting the opposition 22. However, silly unforced errors and an overzealous desire to score from every phase meant after 20 minutes the deadlock had not been broken. Step up Prop George Jones, who did what others couldn’t and dotting down for 5, then seven with a conversion from Griffiths. One became three before the half was out. First Dan Clarke crashed over, then Ross Spencer was one of several who could have finished a fine attack. The score at half time oranges was 19-0.

The second half took off where the second half ended. Player of the Match Steve Weston crashed over after a fine robust carry; then Jack Chantrell went over. 33-0 with 20 or so to play. It was a testament to Vipers that the next score, however, would be theirs. With Dave Collison in the bin for a high tackle the away side were able to capitalise and breach the Sileby line. This would be their final impact on the scoreboard, but the Vikes would score three more times before the game was out through Jack Chantrell, Dave Tate (making his home debut) and finally Jon Griffiths. This took the score to 48-5, and this is how the match would end.

2 from 2 in the league. Next the National Cup.
